The DACA program has been increasingly getting threats of abolition from the extremist members belonging to the Republican Party. However, this has not gone down well with Young immigrant’s organizations and networks who for years now have been advocating for the rights of the immigrant child.
DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. As the name suggests, the program helps protect the undocumented youths from things like deportation provided that an individual meets some requirements. In addition, the program allows the undocumented youth to have a social security number which in turns enables one to secure employment in the US for a renewable period of two years. Besides the program in the majority of the states allows an individual to acquire a driving license and be able to get access to state tuition fees.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is among the high profile individuals who are pushing for the revocation of the program and in a letter to Trump the Attorney General in a letter is giving ultimatums to the trump administration to either rescind the program by September 5th or face legal action. The letter proposes that the revocation should not take place immediately but slowly through phases and no new applications should be considered for renewals. The letter had the consent of more than nine Attorneys General and one governor from the red states.
The Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly convened a meeting with the members of Hispanic Caucus to deliberate on the matter. Kelly stated that the program that used to protect close to a million young migrants was now in jeopardy and that there were already legal cases already in court challenging the program. Dreamers including human rights advocates have already started sounding alarms for weeks. Kelly’s announcement was worrisome to the beneficiaries of the program.
The DACA program has only been in operation for five years now, and within those five years, it has benefited the US in many ways. The program has seen 95 percent of its members work study or do both in the US. Also by attending the colleges and universities students under the program have contributed millions of dollars to colleges and university across the United States of America. By working in the US, the students have also contributed to the country’s economy through the payment of taxes.
Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is one organization that is in the forefront in fighting for the rights of immigrants. The organization is in solidarity with the DACA program, and it’s using all its resources to ensure that DACA is here to stay.
